*sodium borate is used in skin preparations to inhibit fungal growth and improve emulsification in traditional recipes. It occurs naturally in sea water and soil as boron. Normal consumption is between 1-3 mg/day. The richest sources of boron include fruits, leafy vegetables, legumes, and nuts. Wine, cider and beer also contain high levels of boron. The safe range of population mean intakes for adults (1.0-13 mg boron/day) suggested by the WHO.
Topical use – Classified as non-carcinogenic and low toxicity (1). Sodium borate is not well absorbed through intact skin. Topical solutions at 3% showed low toxicity (2).
